Darren Barker defeated by Felix Sturm in first world title defence, whilst Shawn Porter claims IBF welterweight title.
Boxing round-up: Saturday 7th December 2013
Barker – who won the world title after beating Daniel Geale in August – was unable to cope with the blistering start that Sturm made and the fight was stopped in the second round.
Sturm came out of the traps quickly and immediately had Barker on the back foot, the German then knocked down the Brit twice in the second round before the 31-year-old’s corner eventually threw in the towel.
Barker’s disappointing evening would have one last cruel twist as doctor’s confirmed the fighter suffered a suspected dislocated hip in the bout; an injury which could force him into retirement from the sport.
Meanwhile, Shawn Porter took the IBF welterweight title from Devon Alexander in Brooklyn.
Porter secured a unanimous points victory over Alexander after a strong performance at the Barclays Centre to secure his first world title and maintain his unbeaten record.
In other fights on the night, Paulie Malignaggi defeated Zab Judah in the ‘Battle of Brooklyn’, whilst Sakio Bika retained his WBA super-middleweight title against Anthony Dirrell.
