Adonis Stevenson stops Tony Bellew, whilst Dereck Chisora defends WBO international heavyweight title against Ondrej Pala.

Boxing round-up: Saturday 30th November 2013

Tony Bellew saw his world title hopes take a massive blow after he was comprehensively beaten by Adonis Stevenson in their WBC light-heavyweight fight in Quebec City.

Bellew failed to get to grips with Stevenson and rarely threatened the Canadian before the fight was stopped in the sixth round as he was hit with a barrage of blows after Stevenson had sent the Evertonian crashing to the canvas with a monster left hand.

Although he did return to his feet after the knock-down, he was left on very unsteady legs and as Stevenson smelt blood in the bout, referee Michael Griffin stepped in to stop the fight with Bellew brutally penned in the corner of the ring.

Bellew did cause the world champion brief problems during the fight, drawing blood from Stevenson’s nose in the third before knocking him to the canvas in the forth, although the referee correctly deemed that a tangling of feet had been the cause.

Although the 31-year-old had boxed smartly in the opening rounds, he was unable to cope with Stevenson’s power as he began to crank up the pressure and Griffin’s decision to end the contest was the correct decision as the Canadian defended his world title before calling on a potential future clash with Carl Froch.

Meanwhile, it was easier work for another British fighter Dereck Chisora who stopped Ondrej Pala in the third round at the Copper Box in London to defend his WBO heavyweight international title and take the vacant WBA belt.

Chisora had been hurt briefly in the first round by Pala, but the fight was relatively comfortable for the 29-year-old and he caught the Czech with a number of heavy blows in the third before the bout was ended by the referee.

It was the fourth stoppage of the year for Chisora who claims he is now looking for another big opponent in his next clash having been defeated by Vitali Klitschko and David Haye in previous years.
