Grand Slam of Darts Final
Phil Taylor grabbed his fifth Grand Slam of Darts title with a comfortable 16-6 win over Robert Thornton on Sunday evening.
Taylor last won the event in 2011 and comprehensively regained his crown against Thornton just hours after playing out one of the sport’s greatest ever matches against Adrian Lewis in the semi-finals.
Thornton actually had the opportunity to take an early lead in the final as he missed eight darts at the double in the opening leg before Taylor eventually hit double four to move ahead.
Taylor went on to comfortably secure the next four legs of the game and it took Thornton until the sixth leg to get his first points on the board at 5-1. However, it would prove to be a false dawn for the Scot as Taylor rampaged on to hold an 8-2 lead going into the second break.
A fantastic checkout of 164 from ‘The Power’ in the 14th leg moved Taylor into an 11-3 lead, and although Thornton did manage to produce a mini-comeback to bring the score back to 12-6, Taylor did not drop another leg and comfortably secured the title 16-6.
However, the game of the day came in Taylor’s semi-final clash with Adrian Lewis, which was described as one of the greatest games of all time after a record-breaking 32 180s were hit in the match.
Taylor averaged 109.76 throughout the match, with Lewis – who eventually lost 16-9 – actually managing a higher average of 110.99 throughout the epic contest. These three-dart scores also mark the highest ever combined average total between two players.
‘The Power’ managed to take out checkouts of 167 and 160 on his way to victory over Lewis, and although he did not get anywhere near to the heights he reached against ‘Jackpot’ in the final, Taylor’s quality was still too much for a below-par Thornton in Wolverhampton.
